Meet Michael + Joy
Kirtan is a form of musical meditation and heart-centered chanting that invites people to sing together in community. It’s rooted in ancient traditions but open to everyone—no experience needed. Using simple call-and-response mantras, often in Sanskrit, kirtan helps quiet the mind, open the heart, and connect more deeply with yourself and others. Whether you chant, listen, or simply feel the rhythm, it’s about presence, devotion, and shared energy.
Joy and Michael Horntvedt are bhakti yoga practitioners who have been singing kirtan together for over a decade — and for the past year, they've opened that practice to the Kitsap Peninsula community, offering monthly kirtan gatherings. Kirtan has been a constant thread through their life together: a refuge through many seasons, and a practice that has deepened both their marriage and their relationship to something larger than themselves. To go deeper, Joy and Michael traveled to India for a hands-on immersion in the traditions behind the practice — studying the roots of kirtan directly, and gaining a richer understanding of the yogic deities honored in call-and-response chant. What began as a private devotion has grown into something they now share, and they lead community kirtan evenings built around a simple invitation: no experience or belief required, just a willingness to show up, listen, and sing. It's this same spirit of openness and connection they hope to bring to the South Sound community.
